In brief
What sits underneath a network that just works
In most companies the network was never designed, it grew. A switch was added when a room was added, a Wi-Fi extender appeared when the canteen had bad coverage, and somewhere there is a box nobody can identify any more. As long as it works, nobody notices. The moment it starts playing up, nobody knows where to start looking either.
We treat the network as one design rather than a pile of devices. The internet line comes in on a gateway that doubles as the firewall. Behind it sit switches that also power the access points. Traffic is separated into VLANs: workstations, servers, guests, cameras and management each in their own segment, and what is allowed to talk to what is a decision we record — not an accident.
What you notice is mostly quiet. Wi-Fi that doesn't drop when you walk from one end of the building to the other. People working from home who reach the same systems over an encrypted connection as they would at the office. And when something is wrong, nobody has to go and stare into the meter cupboard: we can see remotely which port, which device, and since when.
