In brief
Moving to the cloud is a decision per system, not per company
The cloud conversation often starts at the wrong end, with the question of whether everything should move. In practice you answer that per system. Mail and documents belong in Microsoft 365 for almost everyone. A file server is often better off as SharePoint, sometimes as a virtual machine. A machine driving a production line stays exactly where it is. And ageing software goes wherever its vendor still supports it.
A migration therefore starts with an inventory: what runs where, what depends on what, how much data hangs off it. Then comes an order of work, because some things can only move after others. Data is copied while your old environment keeps running, a small group tests first, and the switchover happens at an agreed moment with a way back. The old environment stays available for a while afterwards.
What changes after that: you stop buying a server every five years and start paying monthly for what you use. That is not automatically cheaper. It is more predictable and more flexible: capacity added when it gets busy, removed when it quietens down, and no Saturday spent rebuilding a broken machine while the whole office sits idle.
